What Causes Pipes to Burst
A pipe can last several decades or even longer if installed and maintained correctly. However, avoid numerous situations where a tube can rupture at all costs. The following are the most significant ones to watch out for.
Freezing
A buildup of ice inside a pipe occurs when water freezes inside the tube, causing it to cease flowing at its normal pressure. If there is overwhelming pressure inside the pipe, it can burst. This is a common occurrence when a joint is weak or brittle.
A simple approach to preventing frozen pipes during cold weather is to turn on your faucets slowly. This will keep water flowing through the pipes and prevent pressure from accumulating. Preventative measures such as installing a pipe jacket to shield exposed pipes are also beneficial.
Too much pressure
In some cases, high water pressure might occur even without ice buildup in the pipelines. This can often be traced back to the municipal water supply. In this circumstance, a pressure-reducing valve should be installed to drop the pressure to safe levels and prevent pipes from exploding due to the pressure. Attaching a pressure gauge to the spout of a sink allows you to monitor the water pressure levels in your residence. The water pressure should be between 45 and 55 pounds per square inch for optimal performance.
Pipes that are a decade old and still in service.
Even though every pipe has a finite lifespan, if your lines are old and in poor condition or if you have neglected to repair them, you may be in danger of having them burst or leak. When exposed to the elements, plastic pipes become brittle, and metal pipes corrode. If your lines are over a century old, you should have a professional plumber inspect them to establish the state of the pipes.
Clogs
Pipes can become clogged due to ice buildup, resulting in higher pressure. If the pressure inside the tube rises to a dangerous level, the line may burst due to the pressure. Dried hair, soap scum, toilet paper, toilet paper rolls, and other items in the drain or toilet can cause a clog to form. A clog may be causing the water from your sink or shower not to drain properly, and you may not even realize it. Dial a plumber as soon as possible to unclog the clogged drain and get it running again.
Roots
Roots are also one of the causes of pipes burst. As a tree grows, its roots seek out different sources of water to sip from throughout its life. Hearts will naturally gravitate toward the water supply if there are large trees near the piping, especially if there are leaks in the system. Roots will use even the smallest openings when searching for water and nutrients. As soon as they begin infiltrating your pipe, the pressure their growth creates will cause your line to burst, forcing you to replace it.
